NEWTYPE Waiters

Yup, the maids you see here are “guys”. It’s a cafe/bar, so you won’t be able to do any crazy things. Get some drinks and talk with your favorite guy maid.

It costs you 1,300 yen for admission which comes with a free drink. They’ve got a good selection of alcohol at around 700yen, and food, ranging from 390 to 780 yen. They don’t charge for the time you stay.

For every visit with a surcharge of 2,000 yen or more, you get one stamp. With every ten stamps on the membership card, you can choose to rank up, or get some special gift. Though, your first ten stamps can only be used for ranking up. Every time you advance in the rank, your admission fee, or “charge” as they say, will cost less and less.

They are planning to create a makeup booth that the customers can use for free.

If you ever come to Akihabara, this might be one of the places you wanna stop by.

How to speak fluent Japanese without (hardly) saying a word PART 3

Okay. I just have to say that her intonation is not 100% accurate. I think she has the Osaka dialect, so if you try this in Tokyo they might not understand it. And… I don’t think I ever heard an abbreviation for First Kitchen.

Ikigami – Movie Trailer
April 3rd, 2009

Ikigami is a Japanese film that came out on 09/27/2008 which originated from a manga, Ikigami. The manga is currently up till volume 6.

I watched this with English subtitle on a flight back from Japan in February. I have to say that I loved it. To be honest, I do not like Japanese films since they tend to be slow paced and have bad acting. But the slow pacing worked really well in this film, and the acting wasn’t bad at all. I wish I was able to watch this with my wife.

The story is about Kengo Fujimoto, working in a government department that delivers an official paper called, “Ikigami” Ikigami is a letter that is sent to a Japanese citizen when they are chosen to be killed within the next 24 hours. “Iku” means to die and “Gami” or “Kami” is paper, so it basically means “death note”.

There is no way to avoid the death. Every citizen is injected with a slight chance of the deadly nanoprobe when they enter an elementary school. These nanoprobes are programed so that it activates and kills the host when they reach a certain date and time between the age of 18 through 24.

The story focuses on three incidents of Ikigami delivery and how the people who gets them reacts and lives the last 24 hours of their life. One is a musician that is trying his best to get famous, one is a son of a politician who is in favor of the Ikigami government policy, and the last but not least, is a guy who wants find an eye donor for his younger sister.

So, why oh why would a government do such a thing? The theory is that by giving a sudden death during the age of 18 till 24 will raise the awareness of limited life, and people will become more productive. It’s kinda similar to the stance of the Akira Kurosawa’s film, “Ikiru”. An old, but near to retirement man starts to question about his life when he is told that he has cancer, and will die soon. The awareness of death has actually let the man start to live his life to his full potential. It’s a good film to watch if you can rent it, and can stand watching a black and white film.

It seems like it is not licensed for distribution in the US yet. You may be able to find a English subtitle somewhere on the web, but I don’t know where to find it. I hope that it gets licensed and imported here.

Moeru Garbage Bags
March 29th, 2009

Chiyoda City – Tokyo Japan
A new garbage bag for flammable is on a limited sale at the Chiyoda city, Sakura Festival.

This is a word play for 燃える, which means flammable and 萌える, which… has a complicated meaning. You may want to read into the wikipedia, but to put it short, it has the element of cuteness or affection. So, with the word play, K-307 has created a garbage bag that has a print of the cute girl (Kudan Sakura) on it. On top of that, there is a story behind her, and the other characters.

The bag is on sale at the location below for 350 yen per bag of ten 45 Liter flammable bags.

Are anime characters caucasian or japanese
March 24th, 2009

Posted by celebritymorph on YouYube.

Quote from Poster:
try googling Do anime characters look caucasian and you’d be surprised how many hits you get. Some people consider it a serious enough issue that they write formal academic papers on it

how about you? Do you think that they look japanese or caucasian?

it’s a bit fast. Just pause it from time to time so you can read the subtitles

========================
I’m not arguing that the characters are definitely japanese and definitely not white as most characters are ambigious enough to be interpreted as any race

It may seem like i’m overanalyzing anime but this is actually a response to those who are overanalyzing anime.

like these people:

Basically some people think that the japanese have a warped self image and they base this conclusion on the fact that anime characters look caucasian to them.

In this video, i argue that the characters may not necessarily look white to everybody and so any conclusion based on the fact that they look caucasian is poorly grounded.

also, I said that asians are good at cosplay but i never said that white people are bad at cosplay.

I think i made an irresponsible generalization as well when i said that whites living in japan experience racism. It would probably be more appropriate to say that they get no special treatment. I edited the video already
